Moveable Feast Delivers Thanksgiving Meals and Turkeys to Clients

This Thanksgiving, we were thankful for the dozens of people that volunteered to deliver holiday meals to our clients. On Saturday, November 20th, volunteers delivered Thanksgiving turkey dinners to our clients.

And on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th, volunteers delivered Thanksgiving Day meals to clients in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, and Harford County. In fact, over seventy-five people volunteered as delivery drivers on Thanksgiving Day to make sure that our clients received their holiday meals.

If you missed out on the Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities, there are more just down the road. Bring a friend – volunteers who are delivering meals should bring a passenger to help with navigation and drop-offs.

  • In recognition of World AIDS Day, on Wednesday, December 1st, assist in the kitchen anytime between 9:30am to 2:30pm. Afterwards, join us for the World AIDS Day service at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church from 6pm to 8pm.
  • On Christmas Eve, Friday December 24th, we will need volunteers to deliver meals and gifts to our clients in Baltimore City and County and Anne Arundel County. Volunteers will arrive at Moveable Feast 9:30am to start delivering.
  • On December 24th, 25th, and 26th, we will need help in our kitchen, starting at 10am.
  • For December 27th through 30th, we will need volunteers to assist in the kitchen from 9am to 2pm.
  • Martin Luther King Jr Day is now a day of National Volunteerism! Join us on Monday, January 17th, 2011 for a few hours in the kitchen, starting at 10am.
Interested in volunteering? Please call us at 410-327-3420 and ask to speak to Tom Patrick, our Volunteer Coordinator.

Tom Receives the Excellence in Executive Leadership Award

On November 17th, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation presented four Fellow Impact Awards and the Excellence in Executive Leadership Award at their annual conference.

Moveable Feast’s executive director, Thomas Bonderenko, received the Excellence in Executive Leadership Award. Of special mention was Tom’s role in developing the highly successful Partnership for Life with Chase Brexton Health Services and AIDS Interfaith Residential Services (AIRS). The Partnership’s signature effort was the B’more Aware of HIV campaign.

About receiving the award, Tom wrote, “This award goes to everyone at Moveable Feast who work together each day to sustain and foster our mission, to those who care deeply about feeding the body and nurturing the human spirit, and who refuse to tolerate the ignorance of fear and discrimination which still forces those who live with HIV and other life-threatening conditions to live in the shadow of our community.”

Most recently, the Partnership for Life held the Living Red Ribbon event. This amazing event attracted hundreds of Maryland residents to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Participants enjoyed a day of HIV awareness activities, entertainment, food, and fun. The focal point of the day was the formation of a huge living red ribbon, breaking a new Baltimore record.

Moveable Feast's headquarters are located in the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Community Center in east Baltimore.

Thankful for your food? Fight hunger today.

Happy Thanksgiving! Today we're thankful that Moveable Feast is able to serve over one thousand clients with nutritious meals, groceries, nutritional counseling, and transportation services. This morning, several volunteers helped us to deliver special Thanksgiving meals to our clients and families, and last Saturday, we delivered delicious Thanksgiving turkeys to clients as well. We are thankful for our strong volunteer base and for the support of thousands of people throughout Maryland and the USA!

Here is another way that you can help us during this Holiday season. The Walmart Foundation has had an ongoing "Fighting Hunger Together" campaign worth a $2 billion commitment.

Part of this campaign is a Facebook competition among the most hunger-stricken communities across the country. Walmart will donate $1 million in funding to the community with the most votes, and $100,000 to the next five runner-ups.

All you have to do is "Like" the Baltimore-Towson, MD region on Facebook to cast your vote. We're currently ranked at #48 in the nation, so we need all the help you can give!

Click here to vote for our region and support the Maryland Food Bank and Moveable Feast!

And tell your Facebook friends about this campaign - one click is all it takes.

Weekly Health Tip: Thankful for Cranberries

Cranberries are shown to have very beneficial effects on the body. NPR reports that:
  • cranberries are full of immune-system-boosing Vitamin C
  • cranberries contain compounds that can help prevent infections such as UTIs
  • cranberries are full of antioxidants called polyphenols, which have an anti-aging effect
  • cranberry red color is due to anthocyathins, which are antioxidants and also have an anti-inflammatory effect. (Inflammation is not only associated with infections, but also cardiovascular disease and cancer).
We plan to try mixologist Gina Chersevani's cranberry cocktail during tomorrow's Thanksgiving feast!

Cranberry Antioxidant Punch
Makes approximately six drinks
  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 6 to 8 pears, medium size
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 medium-sized quinces, sliced with seeds removed
  1. Making quince simple syrup: In a small pot, combine honey, water and quince. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and allow quince to simmer for about 10 minutes or until fruit is soft. Remove from heat, strain the quince out, discard.  Let syrup cool to room temperature.
  2. Making cranberry cocktail: Feed cranberries and whole pears into a juice machine. Double strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer to remove the cranberry seeds. In a pitcher, mix the pear and cranberry juice with 1 cup of the quince simple syrup.  To serve, pour over ice and garnish with fresh cranberries.
  3. To make alcoholic: add 1 1/2 ounce of vodka per cocktail.

Recap of a Great Weekend for Moveable Feast

Moveable Feast enjoyed two great events this past weekend!

On Thursday, November 18th, IIDA (Mid-Atlantic Chapter) and BOMA Baltimore's Community Service Committee hosted their FEAST FOR THE HOLIDAYS 2010 event at Moveable Feast headquarters!

Expert chef Rodney Henry of Dangerously Delicious Pies was present. He and his staff helped participants stuff and bake pies for our clients. All in all, 120 pumpkin or apple pies were baked, 120 cardboard pie boxes were decorated, and 140 grocery bags were decorated for our clients. BOMA CSC also had held a very successful food drive for Moveable Feast.

Check out the complete set of photos from the event at IIDA's Facebook page: Facebook Photos - Feast for the Holidays 2010

On Saturday, November 20th, the Divas of RFTF held BINGOPALOOZA 2010 in Millersville. The event raised over $2400 for Moveable Feast. Many prizes were given away, including many fancy gift baskets, and of course, the grand prize of 4 Lady Gaga tickets and 2 nights at the Intercontinental Hotel on Park Ave in NYC! Congratulations to all winners and thanks to the Divas for hosting this event. Get excited for Divapalooza in the springtime!

All in all, it was a great and productive weekend for Moveable Feast!

ATOMIC BOMBSHELLS

Black Friday is just around the bend. What's #1 on our wish-list? It's not that new Blu-Ray TV. Or that Maytag washing machine. Or even a new iPod. Nope. What do we want more than anything? What item could possibly make 2011 the coolest year ever?

Team Atomic, from Ride for the Feast, has created the 2011 Atomic Bombshells pin-up calendar, featuring the Riders in fabulous poses and attire to boot. This is the gift of the year, and the most unique calendar you'll ever own.

The calendars will go on sale around Black Friday at select bookstores, including Atomic Books, NV Salon Collective, Ma Petite Shoe, Kiss and Makeup, Meadow Mill Athletic Club, Baltimore Tattoo Museum, and Joe's Bike Shop. The calendars will also be sold online at www.TeamAtomic.org.

Each calendar costs just $20, and all proceeds go to Moveable Feast. The sale of an individual calendar will feed another human being suffering from HIV/AIDS or breast cancer for more than FIVE days

Plus, we're fairly certain you'll have the coolest cubicle on the block once you hang up the Atomic Bombshells.

There are a limited number of calendars, so get yours soon!

Weekly Health Tip: Sea Salt

For those of you that haven't heard, Wendy's is coming out with a new french fry in an attempt to stem the flow of their customer base to the ever-popular McDonald's. This new fry is called their "Natural-Cut Fries with Sea Salt."

Everywhere, sea salt is becoming more popular. Without a doubt, everyone agrees that sea salt delivers on the taste, and more so than regular table salt. And consumers definitely enjoy the taste. Sea salt products have exponentially grown in the past few years.

But sea salt, while often touted as a "healthier" choice, can actually be the opposite.

Dietitian Marion Nestle says that sea salt "tastes the same, costs more, and has the same sodium [as regular table salt]."

And in the case of Wendy's, "the new fries have more sodium: 270 milligrams per small order, up from 180. The large has 630, up from 460."

Don't be fooled. Lesson to take away: always check the sodium content on items containing sea salt - they may have the same or more sodium than their table salt counterpart. And ask yourself - does it really make it taste better?

The Living Red Ribbon Project: A Reflection

On October 9th, Moveable Feast and the Partnership for Life gathered at Rash Field at the Inner Harbor for the B'more Aware of HIV: The Living Red Ribbon event. Hundreds of volunteers and Baltimore citizens joined us to promote a new awareness of HIV in the City.

Here is a reflection of the day by Melissa Otterbein, event volunteer and HopeSprings volunteer. HopeSprings is a local organization that works to "equip the Church to provide hope and healing to those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Baltimore and beyond." To learn more about HopeSprings, visit www.hopesprings.org.

As I walked to Rash Field on the sunny Saturday morning of October 9, 2010, my heart was filled with an incredible sense that I was about to embark upon something bigger than myself, something unique, and something that was a relevant way to stand up for advocacy about a health and social issue that so readily impacts this world, and in particularly, Baltimore City. Do you know those moments where your heart is wrapped up in something so much bigger than yourself that you can’t even really put your experience into words?

The B’more Aware Red Ribbon event tugged at my heart for each of those things. As crowds began to gather at Rash Field, slowly turning the field into a sea of red, something was happening. A crowd became fully awake and alive (with some assistance, perhaps, through the free Starbucks coffee that was given out), with morale from government leaders, media, faith-based organizations, community organizations, and community members to show support for HIV/AIDS awareness. Participants were each given a red ribbon poster to hold up and together, participants formed an outline of a red ribbon. Singers led us into songs of joy, and also songs of reflection, as participants were left to ponder how easily strangers could come together and lay any differences aside to support one great cause.

As B’More Aware becomes an annual event, I look forward to coming back year after year to show the world, along with the people of Baltimore, that epidemic doesn’t have to do be the way it is-that HIV/AIDS is real and being silent about it is never the answer. Events like B’More Aware are the kinds of things that the world needs more of. Next October 2011, will you stand in red with us?

Flickr Slideshow: "Oldies"

Moveable Feast has a long history. Now in our twentieth year, it's not surprising that we've moved around a lot. Back in the 90s, we changed locations several times. From Waverly Presbyterian to the old Haussner's Restaurant to St. Benedict's Church, this organization's moved around town quite a bit. We finally came to our present (and permanent!) facility in 2008.

Take a look at these photos from back in the day - they're certainly "oldies but goodies!" See if you can identify any of the locations!

Weekly Health Tip: Spiced Turkey Breast

I love Giada de Laurentiis on the Food Network - her recipes always come out so well, and they are simple to execute. Here's her tasty Spiced Turkey Breast recipe for Thanksgiving.

What unique recipes will YOU be trying this year with your family?

You will need:
  • 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard (recommended: Maille)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 (4.5-5 pound) turkey breast, on the bone, rinsed and patted dry with paper towels
  • 10 cipollini onions
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled, and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken stock
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, for seasoning

Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the mustard, garlic, cumin, oregano, allspice, chili powder, brown sugar and oil. Place the turkey breast in a 9 by13-inch roasting pan. Spread the mustard mixture over the top and sides of the turkey to form a crust. Add the onions, carrots, and chicken stock to the pan. Roast for 45 minutes. Cover the pan loosely with foil and continue to bake for another 45 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast registers 175 degrees F. Allow the turkey to rest for 20 minutes before serving.
  3. Remove the vegetables and arrange on a serving platter. Remove the turkey and place on a cutting board. Pour about 1/2 cup of the pan juices into a small saucepan. Whisk in the flour until smooth. Whisk in the remaining pan juices. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens. Season the pan juices with salt and pepper and pour into a serving pitcher.
  4. To serve, slice the turkey into 1/4-inch slices. Arrange the turkey slices on the serving platter with the roasted vegetables and serve with the pan juices.

Governor Martin O'Malley Visits Us!

Last Monday, November 1st, Governor O'Malley dropped by the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Community Center, where Moveable Feast is housed. The Governor was completing a tour of East Baltimore, visiting various nonprofits and charities.

Accompanying him were two Maryland State Delegates for District 45 (Balto City), Cheryl D. Glenn and Talmadge Branch. Local E. Baltimore community activist Mr. Chris was also present, as well as Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Governor O'Malley took a tour of Moveable Feast's offices and kitchen. He was there just in time for the morning rush, with staff and volunteers in the kitchen making sandwiches and dipping meals into their containers. He then headed upstairs to the third floor to give a press conference.

Governor O'Malley talked about how far Baltimore has come over the past several years, with reductions in drug-related violent crime and improvements in community resources and job creation. O'Malley acknowledged and lauded the work of local organizations for their key role in the city's changes. This included Moveable Feast. For the past twenty years, we have been a stalwart supporter of the poor, homeless, and those living with HIV/AIDS or breast cancer.

Check out more videos of O'Malley's visit on Moveable Feast's YouTube Page.

Linwoods (DOFL) helps The Red Devils

Great news from two great establishments that Moveable Feast works with!

Linwoods Restaurant (in Owings Mills) participates in Dining Out For Life and raises a great deal of money to help feed Moveable Feast's clients. And we work with The Red Devils to provide meals to women living with breast cancer and their families.

On Thursday, November 4th, Linwoods and the Red Devils held a very cool benefit event called "Paint the Town Red." It featured elaborate body painting and an auction, among other fundraisers. Read more about the event on WJZ.com.

Guest Blog by Minxeat's Kathy Patterson: A Restaurant Review of Clementine

One of the Baltimore region's most popular food/restaurant reviewers is guest blogging today. Kathy, who is the author of the minxeats blog, reviews her Dining Out For Life experience at Clementine.

Minxeats features original recipes, thoughts on area restaurants, and other food-related topics. Check it out

I had heard from several sources that Clementine was "awesome," so I was happy to see that the restaurant was not only participating in Dining Out for Life, but it was also one of the handful that were offering 50% of the night's proceeds to Moveable Feast.
Couldn't be a more perfect reason to check it out.
Clementine, located on Harford Road in Hamilton, is an entirely charming restaurant. The decor is rustic, with sturdy wooden tables and chairs, window lamps made from colanders, and a hodgepodge of art-for-sale decorating the walls in the original dining room. The music playing that evening was country with a Texas twang. And our waitress was an absolute doll.
The eclectic beer and cocktail menu took longer to peruse than the food menu. Eventually I settled on a Tokyo Iced Tea - a mild-tasting but potentially lethal concoction containing mint tea and sake, among other things. Mr Minx had a draft Chimay, which honestly was pretty dull for a Belgian beer that cost nearly $8.
As for food, we knew we wanted to try both charcuterie plates - meat and seafood.

The meat version held a slab of Danish fontina, a chubby sausage of Duroc pork seasoned with black mustard seed, fennel, and pear liqueur, a blob of chicken liver paté with thyme, rye whiskey, and honey, and a pile of house-made bread & butter pickles.

The paté didn't look like much, but boy howdy was it good! (And they sell it by the pound!) The whiskey and honey lent a subtle sweetness to the chicken livers, which were smooth and rich and simply wonderful. The juicy pork sausage was similarly edged with sweetness. The cheese was fine, but I would have preferred more meaty goodness.

The seafood plate included pickled shrimp, smoked trout salad with remoulade, and a shrimp paté, along with more pickles. I adore smoked trout, which is what sold the dish. Trout isn't as oily as its cousin salmon, and I find that smoking it provides a more gentle flavor. This salad was lemony perfection. I expected the shrimp to be more, well, pickle-y, but was instead pleasantly surprised by an intense citrus flavor. And while I wasn't crazy about the runny texture of the shrimp paté, the nuggets of crustacean had a nice iodine quality.

The bread & butter pickles were a nice tangy counterpoint to the rich items of the meat plate, but were unnecessary on the seafood version. But really, the only thing I would change is the bread. Charcuterie this good needs something with a bit more character and better crust. And maybe cut into less-dainty slices.

(Yes, I know, I've become a breadist like my father. Don't remind me.)

 On to our entrées.

Mr Minx, feeling somewhat meat-and-potatoes deprived recently, found the description of meatloaf with smoked gouda mashed potatoes and a red eye mushroom gravy enticing. Apparently not only to read: he devoured the whole thing, citing the herbal quality of the meat as one of its best qualities. For me, however, there was probably a bit too much thyme. Loved the super-creamy mash and the homey gravy, though.

Unlike my husband, I'm always more interested in ordering things that are more odd or interesting rather than soul-satisfying and am almost always content with eating an appetizer as my main course. Although I was tempted by the duck entrée, I instead ordered the smoked duck nachos with chihuahua cheese, cilantro sour cream, and pico de gallo appetizer. And I'm very glad I did, as these were some of the best nachos I've ever eaten - freshly fried chips, a generous quantity of tender house-smoked meat, and a gorgeous cilantro-and-lime cream. Not only gorgeous to look at, either. (My notes said the cream was "killer." God, I love cilantro.)

The portion was huge, btw, definitely share-able if ordered as an appetizer. For sure they don't skimp on portions at Clementine, as our desserts (made by the owner's mom) were oversized as well.

Mr. Minx's yellow cake with chocolate frosting and peanut butter filling was like a home-made version of one of the treats of our youth: a Tastykake Peanut Butter Kandy Kake. But ten times better, of course.

If I'm going to eat cake, 9 times out of 10 it's going to be chocolate, but a big white cake with a halo of grated coconut called to me from its very visible spot in the pastry case. It was possibly the best yellow cake I have ever eaten - moist and somewhat dense, with fluffy seven-minute frosting and the perfect amount of coconut. I ate as much of it as I could before I had to admit defeat and a full tummy.

In conclusion: we enjoyed everything immensely. I'd go back again for all of it, especially the charcuterie and cake. And that cilantro cream. I'm thinking that Clementine might just become one of our regular haunts.

Spinners for Dinners - THIS WEEKEND

Moveable Feast's largest fundraiser is the Ride for the Feast, held in May of each year. Bicyclists ride 140 miles and 100% of funds raised go toward feeding our clients. Getting ready for such a big bicycle ride takes a lot of training and practice on our Riders's part.

Here's a great training opportunity to get started - the Canton Club 24 Hour Spinners for Dinners event! Participants will be bicycling for 24 hours straight to raise funds for the Maryland Food Bank. The event will also include a virtual food drive, where online donations can be designated for a purchase of a particular food item. The cost for participants is $15 and includes an event shirt & a ticket for a door prize.

So how's this event related to Moveable Feast? One of our Riders, Andy Bujanda (on Team With A Purpose), will be teaching some of the Spin classes! Team With A Purpose was a great Ride for the Feast team last year.

Andy will be teaching the Spin classes on:
  • Friday, November 5th - 10:00PM
  • Saturday, November 6th - 7:00AM

Weekly Health Tip: Three-Cheese Macaroni

Halloween is over. How many Snickers, Reeses, Milky Ways, or other chocolates did you enjoy? And Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I love this season, but sometimes it's so hard to eat nutritiously.

So as promised, we'll be posting some healthy Thanksgiving recipes each week. Here's a great one for Three-Cheese Macaroni, from FoodNetwork. It's tried and true - and delicious.

You will need:
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 12oz can of evaporated whole milk
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups of grated muenster cheese (4oz)
  • 4 deli-thin slices of muenster cheese (1oz)
  • 1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese (2oz)
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese (1oz)
  • 1/2 head cauliflower, cut into small florets (4 cups)
  • 4 cups of medium pasta shells (9 ounces)
Directions:
  1. Whisk the egg, evaporated milk, cayenne, nutmeg, and salt and black pepper to taste in a bowl. Toss the grated cheeses in a separate bowl.

  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the cauliflower and cook until almost falling apart, about 7 minutes. Transfer with a slotted spoon to a bowl. Add the pasta to the same water and cook until al dente, about 10 minutes. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup cooking water. Preheat the broiler.

  3. Combine the egg mixture and the grated cheeses in the empty pot and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the cheeses melt and the sauce begins to thicken. Remove from the heat and add the cauliflower. Puree with an immersion blender until smooth and light (you can also use a regular blender). Stir in some of the reserved pasta water until creamy.

  4. Toss the pasta in the sauce; season with salt and black pepper. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish and top with muenster slices. Broil until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

Congratulations to Women Accepting Responsibility!

Women Accepting Responsibility, located in West Baltimore, has a mission to "offer women and adolescent females of all sexual orientation whose lives have been shattered by crisis and transition, confidential, nurturing and holistic services in a safe haven." W.A.R. offers many services for women to help them become more aware of sexual health issues, especially HIV/AIDS, and maintain safe and secure homes and lives. Organizations like W.A.R.,  like Moveable Feast, help to fight HIV/AIDS in Baltimore.

The grant has been awarded for a period of 5 years. It will be used to help well over 1,000 teens in three Northwest Baltimore high schools through after-school programs AND summer programs. The programs will  be implementing the tried-and-true BART (Becoming a Responsible Team) curriculum, which was developed and tested by the CDC in Mississippi a few years ago. The BART curriculum was shown to significantly reduce the number of sexually active teens, and among the teens that became sexually active, secured an increase in condom usage.

Congratulations, Women Accepting Responsibility!
